Iron money box-so called Armada Chest-Germany-17th century
German iron money box from the 17th century, possibly from Nuremberg. This type of cases are also called ' Armada Chest' in English. The chests served as safe, for storage of valuables, and often have a large, complicated lock on the bottom edge of the lid Some were used by officers at sea, and were bolted to the deck of the cabin of the owner
It is a medium-sized box of its kind, the sizes are w 70 x h 37 x d 35 cm.
The chest has a nice patina and a well functioning lock This lock with five moving parts works smoothly.
On the inside, the partly open-work, decorative engraved lock plate. On the inside, there is another part with a sliding lock that works well but the little button is missing. Also the keyhole plate is missing. This can possibly be repaired well by a locksmith
Otherwise, a nice case that could also serve well as a safe. The weight is around 70 kg
In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, there is a copy with a similar lock plate: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O380193/chest-unknown/
