This important military medal was set in 1852 by Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (later Emperor Napoleon III) and was influenced by a medal previously designed by his father Louis Napoleon (in the function of King of the Netherlands).
The medal came in importance immediately after the ' Légion d'honneur '.
At the front is an image of Marianne (image for the French Revolution) with the circular "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE", on the backside is the text ' VALEUR ET DISIPLINE '.
The diameter is 28 mm.
The medal has its original ribbon.
During the First World War, the medal was awarded 230,000 times for courage shown.
