LINDSAY KEITH KEMP (3 May 1938 Wirral by Liverpool, UK - 24 August 2018 in Livorno, Italy) South Shields (by New Castle) on the Tyneside has been widely accepted as his birthplace, while this north Eastern port town was his grew up place. Lindsay Keith Kemp was born in the opposite side of the island; Wirral by Liverpool, in the Merseyside, a son to seaman Norman (RN, killed at sea WWII) and Marie.
He enrolled in night classes at Bradford College of Art (Yorkshire), where he became friends with David Hockney, trained at the Ballet Rambert school in London and studies with the great mime artist Marcel Marceau in Paris and the Viennese expressionist dancer Hilde Holger. As with other groundbreaking or provocative choreographers, such as Pina Bausch or Mark Morris, the British actor, mime, performance dancer, plastic artist, choreographer, and influential avant-garde creative force faced immense critical hostility and, unlike those, never grew to be loved by dance critics. Teacher of Mick Jagger and acknowledged mentor to both David Bowie and Kate Bush. 1972 Kemp stages Bowie’s famous Ziggy Stardust concerts at Finsbury Park in north London. His work was more often favorably reviewed by theatre critics. Still, in the late 70s, he leaves Britain for good, choosing Spain and then Italy. Kemp continued to follow a craving for Coastline during his entire life, seeking the seaport towns he had grown up at. He gave preference to Barcelona, Cadiz, Rome and some Italian seaside places.

He caused a sensation the world over with his production “Flowers... a Pantomime for J. Genet”, based on the novel "Our Lady of the Flowers" by outsider clochard writer Jean Genet, which would reach up to Broadway, entailing the beginning of his Company´s golden years. His relationship to Spain dates back to as early as 1977; where he would bring "Flowers" to Spain; in Mallorca Joan Miró attends one evening and a friendship begins, it then materializes in the "Lindsay & Co; Graphic Works, Recording & Performances" exhibition May-June 1980 at the Miró Foundation there. Based in Barcelona from 1979, he continued his career unabated across Europe, He pops up in cinema already 1970. 1998 embodies, unsurprisingly, a glam rock panto dame, together with Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Todd Haynes’s cultish "Velvet Goldmine". He continued to teach and exhibit his drawings (he had published 1988 Drawing & Dancing, with D. Haughton, 2002 he staged a retrospective of his pieces, "Dreamdances", at the Peacock auditorium and created an outlandish Tales of Hoffman that toured throughout Spain. His most recent performance was June 2018 at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, with musician Tim Arnold. In later years, he kept homes in Italy, in Rome and Todi ( Umbria), finally settling down in Livorno, Tuscany, where he passed away last August. Lindsay Keith Kemp was a multi-task, all-around talent, not an exclusively dedicated plastic artist who would work and produce in exclusive-dedication dynamic terms, so his plastic work production isn´t comparatively as big. Further, more the less at those "Carmen & Commedia" drawings, in terms of size and style-chronology, for after leaving Spain the '80s, he chose Italy to finally settle up being as a logical result a fairly part of his production belonging to his time is located in Italy, only smaller and chromatically, not as rich. Those precise aspects turn all that work group into a more rare and scarce production of him. It is as well about the two last of eight Drawings left which will be offered at that current auction.

Figurine and Scene design nr. 7 of an 8 series, depicting one of Kemp's favorite myth topics; the Sailor's Life (intermingled here with Carmen´s Myth). Kemp was very knowledgeable about Clothing History and particularly fond of 2nd millennia Minoan fashion; its exposed breasts bodices were totally in line with his radical vision of body attire aesthetics and feminity. Mixed media (graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, and pastel) on paper (56x42cm). Some edge rips and weaknesses (properly paper-fixed/ strengthened). Unframed. Hand signed. Gallery labeled and stamped on the back. Provenance; northern Spain gallery´s collection.
