Large bronze and wood statue of the god Thoth as an ibis perching on a wooden base. The body carved in wood covered in gesso. The head, neck and feet made of bronze. without base: 21 cm L x 13 cm H x 7.5 cm W Base alone: 23 cm L, 3.5 cm L x 10.5 cm W Provenance: Believed to have been found in Tuna el Gabal located in Upper Egypt, Minya, this piece was originally sold in 1972 in Cairo, Egypt by antiquity merchant, Mohamed Mohamed Abdel-Rahim El-Shaher to American buyers. Ex. private collection, Minnesota, USA. ; Ex The Charles E. Snyder, Jr. Collection (1931-2015), Minnesota, USA; Ex Dr. H. Ruf Collection, Florida, USA. Thoth was worshiped in Egypt from the early dynastic period and until Roman times. He was the patron of the scribes and was venerated as the god of the moon, wisdom, science, and medicine. He had also a significant role in the afterlife. Thoth takes two iconographic forms; he was sometimes depicted as a squatting dog-headed baboon and sometimes as an ibis or ibis-headed human, often carrying the palette and the pen of the scribe.
