Was a pupil of Gerrit Wiegman and Piet Groen, often worked together with his brother, painter Siem Schaeffer.
Educated at the academy of fine arts in Rotterdam.
He had his own painter’s club in the 1950s.
He is best known for his works of the Rotterdam harbours, river views, landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes.
He paints in a romantic-figurative style, reminiscent of the Hague School.
In 2009, the book Jan Schaeffer “wat ik mooi vind wil ik uitbeelden” was published.
Jan Schaeffer is listed at the RKD and the Pieter Scheen.
