Good condition, slight loss of colour
Beautiful oil painting on canvas applied on a panel and inserted in a Baroque frame made of carved wood and mechanically gilded with equally gilded and carved base.
The painting comes from a convent, now closed, of central Italy and has very clear similarities with the S.Cuore by Pompeo Batoni preserved in the Chiesa del Gesù in Rome.
The artist, in making the painting, was also inspired by the visions of the French nun Saint Margaret Maria Alacoque (1647-1690). In the first apparition occurred in 1673 at the monastery of Paray-Le-Monial, while the Saint was before the Blessed Sacrament she tells that: “The Sacred Heart was presented to me in a throne of flames, more blazing than the sun and clear as a crystal, like the worshipped wound; it was surrounded by a thorns crown and surmounted by a cross”.
The artist, just like Batoni, represented the Christ dressed in a red tunic (the colour of blood, martyrdom and humanity) and a blue cloak (the colour of sky and divine), young and handsome, with long hair curled on the shoulders, His face is contoured by a short beard while He opens the tunic showing His heart irradiated by flames and crowned by a thorns crown, and above the heart there is a cross.
Gorgeous Baroque frame mounted on an also mechanically gilded base, while on the oval frame are applied carved friezes and rays.
Slight loss of paint that do not affect the image, in some points the canvas is detached by the panel.
Maximum dimensions: 100 x 90 cm, oval 54 x 60 cm, excellent condition.
Central Italy, last quarter of the 18th century.
