Josep Llimona i Bruguera (1864-1934)
Boxwood, ebony and sterling silver
This iconography of Christ was a great success between the bourgeoisie and the Church in the modernist period, so it was copied in different materials, but original works such as this one are not found outside some churches (as in the Abbey Church of our Notre-Dame de Montserrat), museums (such as the preparatory work in the plaster preserved in the European Barcelona Modern Art Museum) or the best collections of modernist art.
The sculptor did some original sculptures like this one, of different sizes, and with small variations, either for the churches, or for the oratories of the Catalan bourgeoisie, the ones for the churches are polychrome and the ones intended for private worship in noble woods.
He was born in Barcelona in 1864. He attended the workshop of Frédéric Trias and completed his studies at the Llotja school. In 1880, he went to Rome, thanks to a scholarship granted by the Barcelona City Council. Thanks to the works, he realised in Rome, including a sketch of the equestrian statue of Raimond Bérenger le Grand, he received several awards and began to enjoy a great reputation. When he returned to Barcelona, the orders and the achievements were increasing. After a period dominated by the religious theme ("Primera comunión", 1897), he turned to the female nude, as the result of which he earned some of his masterpieces ("Desconsuelo", "Juventud"). In other works, like 'El forjador', the tenderness of the nudes made way to a contained aggressiveness. He was also responsible, among other creations, of the monument to Dr. Robert and of the Christ of Montserrat. He died in Barcelona in 1934.
Josep Llimona is considered to be the true representative of the Catalan modernist sculpture and these works are a masterly synthesis of the Symbolist side of modernism.
