It all starts with Florens - Louis Heidsieck. Born in 1749, this son of a protestant pastor of Westphalia settles in Reims where he falls in love with a Champagne girl... and the Champagne wine. Self-taught, he is driven by a great ambition, 'to create a cuvée worthy of a queen '. In 1785 he founded the Champagne house Heidsieck & cie. He became Master of his art to have the honour to present himself his wine to the Queen Marie-Antoinette.
After the death of Florens-Louis, in 1828, Christian Heidsieck, his nephew, joined with Henri-Guillaume Piper, a man gifted with a prodigious sense of trade. From Habsburg's princes to the emperors of China, 14 fourteen royal and imperial courts would accord him the privilege of 'warrant-holder'. All of high society around the world desired «Piper's wine, developed by Heidsieck”. In 1835, Christian Heidsieck died and, in 1838, his wife remarried with Henri-Guillaume Piper. The Piper-Heidsieck name was born.
After the death of Henri-Guillaume, in 1870, Jacques-Charles Theodore Kunkelmann, partner since 1851, takes the reins of the House. In 1892, his son, Ferdinand-Théodore, succeeded him. His daughter Yolande married in 1926 the marquis Jean de Suarez of Aulan. Pioneer of aviation, this extraordinary man enters the scene and promotes the house around the world by flying his own aircraft. During the second world war, this indefatigable man of action, agrees to hide weapons his champaign cellars to serve the Champagne Resistance. The day before his arrest by the Gestapo, he fled to North Africa, becoming a fighter pilot in the famous Squadron La Fayette where he died in combat in 1944. The Piper-Heidsieck House is placed in custody by the occupant. The house would most assuredly have come to an end at the Liberation if it had not been brilliantly revived by Yolande Kunkelmann of Aulan, assisted by general baron of Ales, with whom she remarried in 1945.
Aulan Francois, the eldest son of marquis Jean Suarez Aulan and Yolande Kunkelmann, succeeded her in 1957. During thirty-three years he was the chairman of Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck. He reconciles development imperatives and family survival. In 1988, he passed the torch to the Hériard-Dubreuil family. The Descours family takes over in 2011. Christopher Descours, grandson of Jean-Louis Descours, key figure of the French employers, is now in charge of the destiny of this great house.
