Five pieces of Javanese Wayang Golek puppets – Indonesia, second half 20th century.
The puppets consist of a wooden stick by which it is held and on which the body is placed. Subsequently, one can place the head on the puppet. This Wayang puppet is wearing antique clothes and has a colourful and detailed, painted head.
The length of the puppets is approx. 60-65 cm, measured from head to the bottom of the sirt.
Wayang is a loanword from Javanese. In Javanese, wayang literally means ‘shadow’.
The derived meaning of this word is a certain type of puppetry that uses shadow or lighting effects.
Although wayang usually refers to the shadow play by means of leather puppets (wayang kulit), in addition, the word is also used for shows with three-dimensional puppets (wayang golek).
