The Dodge WC stands for a series of light military vehicles that were produced during the Second World War by Dodge. Back then, Dodge was already part of the Chrysler Corporation. There are many variations of this vehicle, including a weapon carrier, ambulance, reconnaissance vehicle, radio vehicle and mobile workshop. The nickname for this type of light trucks was ‘Beep’, a name variation on ‘Jeep’.
The WC type designation stands for:
. W for the year of design, which is 1941 in this case 1941 and
. C for a load capacity of a ½ ton.
The C code remained in use for the ¾-ton version and the 1½-tonnes 6 x 6 Dodge.
Dodge started the development of military trucks in 1939 with the ½-ton 4 x 4 VC series, which production began in 1940.
At the beginning of the Second World War, Dodge started manufacturing the WC ½-ton series of light military vehicles in many variants and versions. Almost 80,000 units of this type were produced in 1940-1942.
Some details of the ½-ton trucks are:
. Drive: 4x4
. Wheel base: 116 inch (123 inch for ambulances)
. Engine: Dodge T214, 6-cylinders in line with a volume of 3.755 litres, side and overhead valves, liquid-cooled, 74kW power.
. Gears: 4 forward - 1 reverse
The Dodge ¾-ton 4 x 4 trucks were introduced in 1941. The appearance of these truck was similar to that of its predecessor, the VC, but they were about 15 centimetres wider, they were lower and were equipped with wider tyres of 9.00 x 16 instead of 7.50 x 16. The engine remained the same Dodge T214. The WC was available with a 98 inch (2489 mm) wheelbase, 114 inch (2896 mm) and 121 inch (3073 mm). The Dodge also had many variations, such as: a weapon carrier, ambulance, artillery tractor and radio vehicle. During the war years approximately 250,000 vehicles of the WC series were built.
This particular vehicle was first registered in 1942 and transferred from the US army to the Swiss army in 1945. From 1965, the vehicle was used as a fire truck, causing the vehicle to be always been well-maintained and it is therefore in good and original condition. The vehicle has, as far as we know, never been restored and still contains the original wooden floor in the cargo bed. The vehicle was bought by my father from the Swiss fire brigade and was stripped of the applied fire accessories. The original factory-delivered PTO winch works, and the tyres and battery were renewed. The original convertible top is present, but it is not in good condition. The vehicle has a Dutch licence plate, underwent a renewed Dutch General Periodical Inspection and has no rust.
It is recommended to view the car before placing a bid, so to prevent possible disappointment afterwards. Please contact Catawiki to schedule an appointment. It can be picked up in: The Netherlands.
