Floated around in the International Space Station
As far as we know this is unique: a painting that floated for over half a year aboard the International Space Station, together with Dutch astronaut André Kuipers. This work of art (oil on canvas) is 20x20cm and is called "Newton Apple". It was painted in 2011 by space reporter Piet Smolders and his wife Lyudmila. André Kuipers took it with him on December 21, 2011 when he entered the Soyuz rocket that would take him to the International Space Station. The canvas was originally on a wooden frame, but the painting could only be taken, folded up, in the astronaut’s personal luggage (with a max. weight of 1.5kg). For a log time it was not clear whether the painting could be brought back to Earth, but eventually it did. Afterwards it was not framed to preserve its originality.
“De appel van Newton” ("Newton’s Apple") has the stamps of the International Space Station and the Russian segment of that station on the back, with the date May 5, 2012. After returning (to Earth) on January 17, 2013 it was signed by the astronaut and dated.
Include for the buyer are three special photos of the painting floating in front of the window of the ISS (front and back) and André Kuipers with the painting. These photos are 13 x 18 cm.
A portion of the proceeds from this painting will be transferred to the André Kuipers Foundation for charities.
