Charles Valton was born in the Pyrenees, but grew up in Paris where he assiduously frequented the ‘Jardin des Plantes’. He was the pupil of Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Frémiet, directors of the institution and themselves animal sculptors.
From 1868 to 1914, Valton produced more than 70 animal models and was appointed Professor of sculpture at the school Germain Pilon in 1883.
Two sculptures of Charles Valton are visible in France: one in front of the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, the other representing bighorn sheep at the ‘Jardin des Plantes’ of Nantes.
