Antique barograph Maxant from Paris
Léon Maxant was born in 1856 and began manufacturing timepieces in 1879. In 1887, he was able to take over the company "Maison Desbordes", which was established in 1824 and had a rich tradition. Desbordes produced, among others, physical, mathematical, optical, and nautical instruments, as well as safety tools for steam machines Maxant didn't hesitate to add his own name to the company and from then on the company was called "Instruments de Précision, Léon Maxant Sr", and was located in the Rue de Saintonge 64 in Paris. The company made everything from pressure and air pressure devices such as barometers, barographs, manometers, but also thermometers and thermographs, counter instruments for laboratories and for the Navy. In 1902 he took over the company of competitor Alfred Casse, which was specialized in Aneroid barometers. In 1905, he took over the company Maison Redier of the people who owned it at that time.
Léon Maxant died in 1936 and left the company to three sons. Grandson Bernard Maxant wrote a book about the history of the barometer. The company Maxant Industries still exists and is part of the "groupe Jules Richard Instruments", based in Fesches Le Chatel, near Audincourt and Beaucourt, where precision technology has been natural since Frédéric Japy.
