The magazine “Ons Vrije Nederland” appeared for the first time during the German occupation of the Netherlands, as a stencilled copy of “Vrij Nederland”. After the liberation of the Netherlands in May 1945 it appeared as an illustrated weekly. In the first two years after the liberation, the content consisted mostly of memories of the occupying time in photos, prose and poetry. In addition, the necessary attention was given to the trial of (Dutch) war criminals (Mussert, Blokzijl, van Genechten) and to the progress of the processes in Nuremberg. Also to the question of reconstruction got a lot of attention. Developments in the Middle East (Palestine) and Asia, such as the surrender of Japan and the situation in the then Dutch East Indies are also closely followed.
These year volumes of the magazine are also interesting for lovers of comics. Starting from number 17 of the 5th year, the magazine contains a balloon comic about Tom Puss and Bumble. First as loose stories, later as a complete story.
