Joop Stierhout (Arnhem, 28 March 1911 – Amsterdam, 11 March 1997) was a Dutch impressionist painter. He gained notoriety because of his port and city views of Amsterdam, his place of residence. Joop Stierhout painted in the style and tradition of the Hague School.
After attending the art academy in his home town of Arnhem, Stierhout settled down in Amsterdam. In the period before the Second World War, he often painted landscape scenes in het Gooi and the Vechtstreek. However, the war prevented him from going on artistic travels.
After the war, he isn’t influenced by the popularity of modernism, but focuses on traditional craftsmanship when making his cityscapes, portraits and flower still lifes. His cityscapes become lighter in colour during the eighties, after a stay in the French Provence.
Joop Stierhout's palette is very colourful with 13 to 17 colours. His genuine style is in line with the French Impressionists like Monet, Bonnard and Marquet. He could not agree with the latest developments that were flourishing in the Netherlands, his works fits in more with artists like Breitner, Israëls and Jan Sluyters.
