The first Royal Nords were cycles with a 100cc-auxiliary engine and light 125cc-motorcycles. In 1935 the company name was changed to NV Werkhuizen Gebroeders Hufkens, but Hubert and Henri left the firm.
After the Second World War, production continued and in 1951, Royal Nord presented motorised tandems and mopeds. In 1952 there were models with 125 and 150cc-blocks from Gillet, Maico and ILO, in 1953 also Maico of 175 cc. The Maico Taifun 400 was sold as "Royal Nord 400" starting in 1954. This machine was almost beautiful by ugliness, with an excessive amount of sheet metal and huge fenders. Most customers, however, found him ugly of ugliness and the machine turned out to be almost unsaleable. In 1955, the Maico 250 was presented as Royal Nord. It looked a lot smoother and sales were better.
Royal Nord focused mainly on the production of mopeds in the late 50s. They decide to look at Italy for a smoother design. Royal Nord delivered really smooth sports mopeds with the familiar 180°-fenders, but also "user mopeds" with leg caps to protect the driver against the weather conditions. The mopeds sold so well in Belgian Congo that even factories were set up in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) and Elisabeth City (now Lubumbashi). Also, the now ailing Belgian brands FN and Gillet also produced Royal Nord-licensed mopeds by this time.
1960 was a bad year for Royal Nord. Jean Hufkens was killed in a car accident, and in addition, Belgian Congo became independent, because of which a large part of the sales market disappeared. They tried to keep their heads above water with the production of lawn mowers. The advent of Honda on the Belgian moped market was a second blow.
However, Royal Nord sold — also in the Netherlands — more mopeds than they could produce, and that despite a relatively high price. A major reason for the purchase was that a Royal Nord went faster than the Kreidler mopeds of the Germans who, in large numbers, came from the Ruhr area to Eindhoven on the weekends. In 1967 the moped production ended, but the Royal Nord-store in Hasselt remained. The store was operated by the brothers Freddy and Marc Hufkens. One could still buy bicycles and mopeds there, though not the Royal Nord brand.
The brothers stopped at the end of 2011 with the firm, which would then would be demolished.
