A copper croup nebuliser that was once used to treat
people who were short of breath, in sanatoriums for instance.
copper croup kettle
This device was used to bring water to the boil so that steam would come out of the nozzle. The cup that hangs on the end of the nozzle is used to catch the water droplets. It is a so called ‘croup kettle’ which was used on patients (mostly children) suffering with pseudo croup. Pseudo croup is a condition which causes swelling of the mucous membranes around the vocal cords, resulting in viral inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. This makes breathing difficult and children quickly feel out of breath. Pseudo croup patients often experience a barking cough and loud breathing. It used to be thought that inhaling humid air would reduce these symptoms, and although that has not been proven in recent studies, the humid air did manage to reduce the cough’s prickly tickle. A croup kettle was easier to use than a regular kettle of boiling water as it could be used outside of the kitchen. The use of croup kettles diminished once showers became standard in homes, as a shower could easily fill a whole room with humid air.
This is how it works:
Boiling water evaporates above a spirit flame. The water vapour escapes from the boiler through a screwed-on, curved thin tube of approximately 40 cm length. The tube is not horizontal but curves slightly upwards so that it does not produce condensation. Instead it blows out steam towards the patient. A small bucket hangs at the end of the tube to catch any condensation droplets. As well as in hospitals, these nebulisers were available to rent from pharmacies and other medical associations for home-use.
It only evaporates water without the addition of any medicine.
