Voigtlander Superb
In 1933 Voigtlander introduced a twin-lens reflex, as a competitor of the Rolleiflex. Because the construction of the Rolleiflex was protected by all kinds of patents, Voigtlander was forced to apply a different construction. That has led to an interesting camera, which is substantially different from the Rolleiflex. For instance, the film is not transported vertically but horizontally and the horizontally hinged back consists of two parts. When focusing, the parallax is corrected by tilting of the viewfinder lens. By means of a small prism, the shutter speed can be read from above. The aperture is controlled by a separate button on the front and not via a lever around the lens. In short, in terms of history of camera construction, the Superb is an interesting camera.
The camera offered here looks nice, apart from the paint damage that is shown in the photos. No falling damage or dents/scratches. The camera has not been tested with film, but with the exception of diaphragm and self-timer everything seems to function properly. The aperture will not open all the way to 3.5 (max. between 4 and 5.6) and the opening is not completely round. But it closes up to 22. The viewfinder image is somewhat greenish, due to oxidation haze on the mirror. The spirit level above the focusing screen is intact. The shutter runs without faltering, even the slow speeds. The lenses are clear and scratch-free. The self timer only works if the cocking lever is pushed back.
For collectors who are not bothered by the couple of signs of aging of this 84-year-old camera, this is a beautiful, but above all interesting collector’s camera.
The camera weighs around 0.9 kg and will be packaged well and sent via registered mail.
