Hobbe Smith (1862-1942) - Zeilboten op het water met stadsgezicht op achtergrond
Hobbe Smith (1862-1942) was the son of a house painter. He went to the Royal Academy for Visual Arts in Amsterdam and was taught among others by August Allebé. Subsequently he studied at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Antwerp, under Karel Verlat.
The style of Smith is characterized by a free and impressionistic touch, with feel for atmosphere. Hobbe Smith painted a wide variety of subjects, many figure pieces, often nudes, many seascapes and cityscapes, but also still-lifes, portraits, landscapes, flowers, interiors, ships, mills, soldiers and historical pieces. He admired the work of Jacob Maris, but his own work is brighter and lighter. In 1888 he won the Willink van Collenprijs. It was not until 1920 that he received greater fame after an exhibition in the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
Smith was member of the art associations 'Arti et Amicitiae' and Sint Lucas in Amsterdam and of Pulchri Studio in The Hague. He died in 1942, at age 79. Work by Smith is among others featured in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe int Enschede, the Drents Museum in Assen and in the Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek.
